Well well well (as Nicko might have said), what a day that was.
After an early start for yours truly, I met up with Adrian "it was the pasty - cor, that's vile" Swift in Luton. The silly sod had left his CDs at the venue he played the night before with his Other band, but after an unsuccessful phonecall he decided to abandon all hope of retrieving them that day and we set off to Birmingham. A clear stretch of M1, a bit of Seventh Son and a missed junction later we arrived at the rehearsal room - the very same place that hosted my audition and subsequent rehearsal all those years ago. We started setting up as Speed "Have you seen me magic trick?" Harris and young Joe "Nicko gave me these!" Lazarus arrived. Sadly Matt from Iron-On couldn't make it, but the good news is - he can now do JB's in Dudley on Sat 30th June!!! At such a big place it would be a shame to give the crowd anything less than the best we've got, and now they'll bloody well get it! I just hope they're ready for it...!
To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect from the lad on the drums. I'd heard he'd joined the band for a few songs in the past, but had heard very little about his actual playing except for "He's a bit fast!". Well - he NAILED it. Speed told me before we started that "He plays just like Nicko", to which my mind instantly said "Yeah, right". But he bloody does!
We all made a few mistakes, but by and large it was really good. Phantom was particularly barnstorming, and we even managed Rime of the Ancient Mariner with only minor f*ck-ups! Oh, and let me tell you - farting in a small, sweaty rehearsal room is definitely BANNED from here-on in. Mr Swift was dwelling in a brown cloud and it had nowhere to go!
And never let me sing Maiden. Ever. It's horrendous!!!
So - exciting times ahead! We've landed a worthy replacement to the great Quicko McBrain AND a worthy replacement to the great Big Dickinson. It could have all gone horribly wrong, but we've really landed on our feet with these guys. I can't wait to see how this plays out - the future is looking pretty f*cking good for Hi-On Maiden!
