DAY FOUR
Friday 29th February 2008 (Leap Day) - 11:15 AM
A motorway somewhere between Ankara and Izmir
I awoke to the thunderous alarm clock of Adrian "I'm going commando" Swift at 9 AM this morning, a little too early for everyone else's liking but absolutely fine by me. I jumped in the shower to wake myself up a bit - it's unusual to get a quality shower when on the road, so I'm taking every shower possible (I think I had two yesterday!). I hopped on the internet to find some Turkish fans had already signed up to our forum and responded to my earlier diaries, which was pretty special. I don't think we plugged the website, maybe we should do so at the next two gigs.
We met in the lobby at 10:30 and got in the van to go and get the gear from the venue. I'd "done a Swifty" and lost me phone, but it was recovered by Firat just as I'd given it up as lost. What a hero! We're now on the road for a fairly long ride to Izmir, which I think is on the coast so there should be some nice views. Two down, two to go.
4:00PM
Still on the road - hopefully a little closer to Izmir! This is the kind of travel and comfort we'd love to have all the time. We've just finished watching Back To The Future (Firat promises parts 2 & 3 tomorrow), and are now on Star Wars Episode 3. I'm stealing videos from Speed "magic botty" Harris and battling with a numb arse. It's been a drive filled with dramatic scenery, as we've passed on roads through mountain ranges and vast expanses of...well, not very much at all. My kind of place! We stopped a little while ago for half hour or so to eat some pink chicken, Nicko "stabbed him in the eye" McBrain Jnr wasn't brave enough to eat the meat, while I had a few bits and Speed polished off his lot. Let's hope we've all got strong constitutions. I simply want to get to the venue, soundcheck and have a bit of a laugh swapping instruments again!
10:30PM
Well, that was an interesting soundcheck. The room is a multi-leveled space, and the monitors are flown which is a first for yours truly. There's a massive hiss coming out of them, and this is a big no-no. Mr Speed was less than impressed, and the drumkit is seemingly made out of Opal Fruits. There's no FEEL onstage, which is a bit annoying. I was expecting to run into a less-than-brilliant venue at some point on this tour. Still, I'm sure that once the place is full it'll feel better. We'll see...
