DAY FIVE
Saturday 1st March 2008 11:00 AM
On the road to Istanbul
Well, last night's gig was half and half for me. We got back to the venue at around half 11, and were furnished with drinks (it's going to be a bit of a shock going back to gigging in Britain where 'nee focker gives yer anything'). Adrian "he put it back in the wrong hole!" Swift was informed that his amp had died, and that he'd have to go through the flown monitors. Joy! We hit the stage and the only thing coming out the monitors was Mister Swift. Myself and Speed "magic cock!" Harris whacked our amps up to 11 and carried on hoping the soundman would compensate (which apparently he did). It's partially our own fault for not sorting out a monitor mix, but with the amount of hiss we had at soundcheck there didn't seem to be any point!
The crowd were amazing, possibly the best so far. I couldn't really get into the gig with the on-stage sound the way it was, and Nicko "one parsnip" McBrain Jnr was having a hell of a time with that orange pot-and-pan kit. Still, we played very well in the face of adversity. After the gig we greeted the fans on their way out (a bit like a wedding, really! "Thank you for coming..."), and then packed down and scarpered. Some locals helped us get the gear back to the hotel, which was unprecedented and I for one was very grateful. Though I'm not sure the locals were too pleased with our 3 AM rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone"...
Back at the hotel we contemplated the night - we're all wishing we had more gigs over here as we're having a whale of a time, even if all the travelling is starting to take a toll. The crowds, the atmosphere, the general generosity we're expeiriencing over here is completely gobsmacking. We kipped down (after Speed and Swift got their fill of internet porn - sorry Mum) and woke up a few hours later to pile into the van. On to Istanbul now - I checked some road maps before we came out here and discovered that the only way by road is to head back East (essentially to where we came from yesterday) and then head north-west. But! Our organiser knows of a mysterious ferry-boat which will whisk us from one bit of land to another bit of land, shaving untold hours off the journey. Planes, trains, vans and boats. All we need now is a hot-air balloon...
